Grammy-winning Jarocho-rockers Quetzal to perform at 2013 San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival
August 12, 2013 – San Francisco
Acción Latina and Brava Theater Center, producers of the San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival, have announced that Grammy-award winners Quetzal will play at this year’s festival on Aug. 16. The acclaimed Jarocho-Rock band from East L.A. were added to the lineup at the last minute to fill in for Los Soneros del Tesechoacán, who could not make it to the U.S. due to visa issues.
“We are incredibly lucky that Quetzal was available to play at the Son Jarocho Festival at the last minute,” said Georgiana Hernandez, Executive Director of Acción Latina. “Of course we are very disappointed that Los Soneros del Tesechoacán could not be here, but we are looking forward to bringing them in the spring of 2014.”
Quetzal, who are known for their activist musical perspective, use of traditional instruments and the soulful vocals of lead singer/scholar Martha Gonzalez, won a 2013 Grammy Award for “Best Latin Urban, Rock, or Alternative Album” for their latest release “Imaginaries,” on the Smithsonian Folkways label.
Quetzal rounds out the already outstanding lineup at the 2nd Annual San Francisco Son Jarocho Festival, where they will perform alongside Son de Madera from Xalapa, Veracruz, Cambalache, and local Son Jarocho group DíaPa’Son.
Concerts at the Brava Theater Center will be held on Friday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m., with additional free outdoor concerts at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 at Union Square and on Aug. 15 at Yerba Buena Gardens.
